Proven shown to help in studies or recommended by guidelines May help small studies, worth a try Traditional traditional use, weak evidence
Most frequent belching is not gas from the stomach. Air is drawn into the oesophagus and expelled, often without you noticing. Trying to belch for relief pulls in more air.
- Belly breathing: hand on your abdomen, breathe in slowly through the nose so the belly rises rather than the chest, breathe out slowly. 10 minutes twice daily and whenever you feel the urge to belch Proven
- When the urge comes, keep your mouth slightly open or hold a pen between your teeth; this makes air-swallowing harder May help
- Speech-therapist or behavioural therapy gave clear improvement in clinical trials Proven
- Reduce air-swallowing at meals: eat slowly with your mouth closed, do not talk while chewing, avoid straws and drinking from the bottle May help
- Avoid fizzy drinks, chewing gum and hard sweets that are sucked May help
- If belching comes with heartburn: avoid large or fatty meals, do not eat within 3 hours of bedtime, and see your doctor.
- Chamomile or fennel tea after meals is traditionally used and safe in moderate amounts, but evidence for belching is weak Traditional
See a doctor if you notice:
blood in stool or black stool, weight loss without trying, difficulty or pain swallowing, repeated vomiting, pain or diarrhoea that wakes you at night, or fever.
