What is the Mediterranean diet?
A lasting way of eating, not a short-term diet: vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains form the base of each meal, with olive oil and fish, and little red meat, sugar or processed food. Guidelines recommend it for inflammatory bowel disease, fatty liver and heart health Proven, and it is a less restrictive option for IBS Proven

- Dinner: lentils or chickpeas with vegetables and brown bread, at least three hours before bed.
Omani foods that are already Mediterranean
Grilled fish, vegetable maraq, lentils (dal), chickpeas, laban, lemon, and dates in moderation. The key changes are the size of the rice and meat portions and the amount of ghee and sugar, not giving up our local food.
Adjustments for your condition
- IBS: you may need smaller amounts of onion, garlic and legumes.
- Crohn's disease with a narrowing: peel and cook vegetables well, and avoid whole nuts.
- Diabetes and obesity: watch portions of rice, bread, dates and fruit.
- Reflux: reduce tomato and citrus if they worsen your heartburn.
See a doctor if you notice:
blood in stool or black stool, weight loss without trying, difficulty or pain swallowing, repeated vomiting, pain or diarrhoea that wakes you at night, or fever.
